I. PCIe Oscillators
Positioning: The very first-stage reference clock source for PCIe systems, outputting a standard 100 MHz differential reference clock. Available in two main variants—MEMS crystal-less and quartz crystal oscillator—eliminating the need for external passive crystal oscillators, thereby simplifying the BOM and PCB layout.
Representative Models: DSC1224, DSC557 Series
Key Features
1. Native compliance with PCIe Gen 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 specifications; HCSL differential output; support for optional spread-spectrum clock (SSC) to reduce EMI emissions;
2. Utilises Silicon MEMS technology, eliminating the need for an external quartz crystal oscillator; offers superior vibration and shock resistance and reliability compared to traditional crystal oscillator solutions; wide-temperature versions support -40°C to 125°C;
3. Ample jitter margin is provided, reserving the majority of the jitter budget for the downstream link, making it suitable for high-speed CXL and PCIe 6/7 links;
4. Primarily single-channel output with a compact QFN package; supports output enable (OE) control, making it suitable for space-constrained designs such as SSDs, edge cards and embedded boards;
5. The automotive-grade version is AEC-Q100 certified, designed for automotive domain controllers and high-speed in-vehicle PCIe nodes.
Typical applications: AI accelerator cards, NVMe solid-state drives, industrial PCIe peripherals, in-vehicle computing units, and compact embedded hosts.
II. PCIe Clock Generators
Positioning: A single-chip clock SoC integrating a PLL, divider and multi-channel output drivers. It receives a reference source (MEMS oscillator or crystal oscillator input) to generate multiple independent PCIe reference clocks simultaneously; SSC can be enabled individually for some channels. It serves as the core timing hub for servers and multi-endpoint platforms.
Representative Models: ZL30282, DSC557-03, ZL30292 series
Key Features
1. Single-chip integrated PLL, supporting up to 19 HCSL differential outputs; each channel can be independently configured for frequency, SSC enable/disable and output enable; some channels output 100 MHz PCIe clocks, whilst others output 25 MHz platform clocks;
2. Ultra-low intrinsic jitter, with typical RMS jitter of <0.3 ps for non-spread-spectrum outputs; supports coexistence of SSC and non-SSC channels on the same chip, accommodating both EMI requirements and jitter-sensitive switch chips;
3. Native compatibility with PCIe Gen 1 to Gen 7, supporting the Intel DB2000QL server platform standard and adapted to UPI/QPI interface timing;
4. Wide voltage and temperature ranges; industrial grade: –40°C to +85°C; certain aerospace-customised models feature radiation hardening;
5. I²C configuration interface, enabling in-system software adjustment of divider and spread-spectrum parameters, supporting platform timing debugging and dynamic power management;
6. Eliminates the need for multiple discrete oscillators, significantly reducing component count and routing complexity.
Typical applications: AI computing server motherboards, storage JBODs, multi-slot PCIe backplanes, router/switch control boards, and multi-node synchronisation timing for automation equipment.
III. PCIe Clock Buffers
Positioning: Clock fan-out distribution chips that receive a single high-quality PCIe reference clock and replicate multiple phase-coherent, low-additive-jitter HCSL clocks. These are used to distribute a single reference clock to multiple PCIe endpoints, switches and retimers; they do not perform frequency synthesis, but only signal replication and drive amplification.
Representative Models: ZL40294B, SY75602/SY75604/SY75608/SY75612
Key Features
1. Ultra-low added jitter: As low as 6fs in high-end models, far exceeding the 80fs requirements of PCIe Gen6/Gen7 and DB2000QL, providing substantial timing headroom for the system;
2. Extensive fan-out options: 2-, 4-, 8-, 12- and up to 20-channel differential HCSL outputs, with built-in termination resistors per channel to simplify PCB termination design;
3. Channel-independent OE deactivation, supporting clock gating by zone to reduce idle node power consumption;
4. Available in industrial-grade and automotive-grade (AEC-Q100) versions; the SYA756xx automotive-grade series is designed for PCIe clusters within automotive ADAS domains;
5. Fixed-phase distribution with strictly controlled jitter between channels, making it suitable for long-distance clock routing on backplanes and multi-chip synchronisation;
6. 3.3V single-supply, low-power HCSL drivers, reducing dynamic power consumption compared to traditional LVDS buffers.
Typical applications: server backplane clock distribution, PCIe switch cards, CXL memory pools, in-vehicle high-speed computing domains, and high-density storage arrays.
IV. Switchtec™ PCIe Switches
Positioning: The Switchtec series of PCIe packet-switching chips from Microchip are PCIe fabric interconnect devices. When used in conjunction with the three timing devices mentioned above, they enable port expansion, traffic routing, hot-swapping and resource virtualisation between the Root Complex and multiple endpoints and CXL devices; Note: The switches themselves are data-link switching devices, not clock devices; however, Microchip provides reference designs verified in conjunction with its clock generators and buffers, forming a complete PCIe timing and switching solution.
Representative Series: Switchtec Gen4, Gen5, Gen6 series; PCI11xxx / PCI12xxx
Key Features
1. Protocol specifications: PCIe Gen3/Gen4/Gen5; next-generation support for PCIe 6.0 and CXL 3.1; support for SR-IOV, ATS, PRI and PTM (Precision Time Measurement);
2. Flexible port configuration: offers various channel configurations including 4-port, 8-port, 16-port and 24-port options; supports port splitting, reverse ports and multi-host mode ;
3. Integrated hot-swap controller, port isolation and fault isolation ensure that a single-port failure will not cause the entire network to crash;
4. PTM (Precision Time Measurement) enables cross-endpoint time alignment in distributed AI clusters and multi-controller synchronisation scenarios for humanoid robots;
5. Supports virtualisation and resource partitioning, making it suitable for GPU pooling, CXL memory expansion and shared storage architectures;
6. Microchip’s official reference design has been jointly validated with the ZL series clock generators and the ZL40294B clock buffer, ensuring matching timing parameters and reducing hardware debugging risks.
Typical applications: GPU pooling in AI servers, CXL memory expansion chassis, storage switching, industrial multi-controller interconnection, humanoid robot central computing platforms, and edge AI gateways.
